Mary Jo White is one of the best lawyers in American history
Mary Jo White is a top attorney whose career spans more than three decades. A graduate of Columbia Law School, White began her career at Columbia Law Review as a writer and research editor before moving on to the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York in 1993. In this role, she successfully prosecuted some of the largest national and international cases. In particular, her work on the 1993 World Trade Center bombing case secured convictions for John Gotti. Currently, she serves as the chair of the litigation department at the law firm Debevoise & Plimpton.

During her tenure as chair of the SEC, White fought against the rogue behavior of Wall Street. She has successfully prosecuted corporate executives who misled investors with false and misleading public disclosures. One of her most famous cases was when Morgan Stanley pleaded guilty to misleading investors by not disclosing political contributions to the SEC. Despite her achievements, White’s tenure as the head of the SEC has been plagued by controversy. In 2017, U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren called for her dismissal. In addition, she failed efforts to make corporations reveal their political contributions have garnered some criticism from the American public.
