Undefeated WBO lightweight champion Vasyl Lomachenko has been on the boxing scene for only 3 years, but he’s already on everyone’s radar as one of the best fighters in the world. Though many fans don’t know who he is, Lomachenko’s fights are coming up fast, so it’s time to get to know him now. You may be surprised at what you learn! Who Is Vasyl Lomachenko?
What is Lomachenko’s style?
In what I consider the best fight of 2018, Lomachenko did what many had thought impossible by taking to pound-for-pound kingpin Gervonta Davis’s power. Lomachenko possesses a style that relies on constant pressure and attacking from an unconventional angle which has made him one of the most dangerous fighters in the world.
How did he get here?
Born in 1996, Vasyl Lomachenko learned how to box at the age of six and started fighting professionally at the age of twelve. By his twenties, he became a two-time Olympic gold medalist and had already become a world champion. In boxing circles, Vasyl Lomachenko is considered to be one of the best boxers in the world, but most mainstream sports fans have never heard of him. There are plenty of reasons for this: Lomachenko has remained obscure because most major television networks have ignored him due to his Eastern European roots; other sports are more popular; boxing is under-covered by American media outlets; and many observers still believe that professional boxing is on its way out due to poor ratings and ungrateful audiences.
What next for Vasyl Lomachenko?
Vasyl Lomachenko is a professional boxer who is now defending his WBO lightweight world title against Anthony Crolla. A victory would mean he is the only undisputed world champion in boxing and would unify the titles at that weight. If Lomachenko has one weakness, it is his chin ข่าวมวย, which he displayed earlier this year when he lost a decision to Nicholas Walters for the WBA and IBF belts at featherweight. But how does it look?
Where should he go after Salido?
After winning the WBO featherweight title from veteran champ Salido, then defending it against two top contenders, Lomachenko will now look to take on his toughest challenge. This March, he’ll travel to Japan for a title shot at the WBA (super) featherweight champion Nicholas Walters. Standing 6’3 and possessing fast hand speed and devastating power, Walters has only suffered one loss in 32 bouts. He’s coming off of a dominant KO victory over one of boxing’s best defensive fighters in Nonito Donaire (who could have defended his belt six times). A win over Lomachenko would really be the perfect way to end 2014 with another well-deserved victory. And who knows what else this Ukrainian youngster has in store for us?
Would you rather fight Pacquiao or Mayweather (if you were him)?
Trying to decide between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather for which boxing match to watch? Well, don’t. They’re both on the verge of retiring any day now, so it’s not even a hard decision. The best boxing news you’ve never heard of is Vasyl Lomachenko (see what I did there?), who just landed the WBO Super World Lightweight Title belt in a one-sided KO victory against Miguel Marriaga last Saturday night at Madison Square Garden. On paper, Lomachenko might seem like just another Ukraine 2–a slight nod at his second pro fight coming up as an overmatched 13-year-old fighter against rugged American veteran Gary Russell Jr.
Is it time to put ‘Hi-Tech’ in the Hall of Fame?
It’s easy to disregard Jorge Masvidal based on his inconsistent, brawling style and his general lack of finishes. It’s even easier when you point out that he got dominated by Demian Maia at UFC 211 in a fight that was never really close or competitive. What people don’t seem to be talking about is just how good a boxer he is. He has wins over Stephen Thompson, Gunnar Nelson, and Lorenz Larkin, all elite-level strikers who could also hold their own on the ground.
What do you think his legacy will be (if he never loses)?
How he develops his fighting style will determine how his legacy will be seen, but given the talent, he’s shown to this point, it is easy to imagine that Lomachenko will be recognized as one of the best boxers of all time.
Lomachenko has already made a name for himself in the boxing world and has demonstrated such intelligent boxing skills that he could easily dominate the sport and become recognized as one of the greats. He’s made it clear that there is no reason for him to ever fight someone he doesn’t believe can push him and improve his skill set. If Lomachenko maintains his unrivaled work ethic and continues to refine his raw natural talent with time, there are few fighters capable of defeating him.
